In 1973, a few teachers in Houston joined together. They wanted to be treated with dignity and respect. They wanted the freedom to teach, the independence to make professional decisions, and the opportunity to allow students to soar. They became the Houston Federation of Teachers.
Today we are the largest employee union in Houston ISD. When the Federation speaks, people listen. The Houston Federation of Teachers is affiliated with the Texas Federation of Teachers (Texas AFT) and the 1.7 million-member American Federation of Teachers (AFT). In addition, we are affiliated with the 3.5 million-member AFL-CIO. We have a voice at the local, state, and national levels.
Our union represents all non-administrative public school employees. As such, our union’s priorities reflect the interests of teachers, counselors, librarians, support professionals, and the people who make our public schools work.
The Houston Federation of Teachers welcomes you to our website and to our organization. If you are a member, please feel free to browse, ask questions and utilize all the information we have provided. If you are not a member, we hope you will join our organization.
